Kansas State School for the Blind

Kansas weather can shift in minutes, making it especially challenging for students who navigate campus with visual impairments. To improve safety, comfort, and accessibility, the Kansas State School for the Blind envisioned a fully enclosed, temperature-controlled foyer linking the Edlund Dormitory, Dining Hall, and Johnson Education Building.

Completed in September 2023, the new Entry Foyer provides a safe, weather-protected corridor for students and staff—enhanced with a coffee bar and flexible seating for school events. Despite material delays, labor shortages, and pandemic-era hurdles, the project came together seamlessly and with thoughtful attention to the needs of the visually impaired community.

The result is a welcoming, intuitive space that strengthens campus connectivity and enriches daily life for everyone who uses it.
